The other ultimatum comes from his girlfriend Samantha, who wants him to end his association with the mob. Jerry figures that being alive, although in trouble with his girlfriend is the better alternative so he heads south of the border. Finding the pistol is easy but getting it home is a whole other matter. This amusing but anemic Julia Roberts & Brad Pitt asphalt epic borders on being a romantic screwball comedy about a priceless antique pistol with a deadly curse on it. Sophomore scenarist J. H. Wyman’s infuriatingly complicated script intertwines the frantic, often feeble-minded misadventures of our two attractive superstars in a hither & yonder plot that simmers instead of sizzles. Bumbling, trouble-prone, crime syndicate gofer, Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt of “Snatch”), breaks up with his clueless girlfriend, Samantha (Julia Roberts of “Erin Brockovich”), after his mob boss packs him off to Mexico to fetch a treasured firearm known as “The Mexican.” Meanwhile, Sam high tails it to Las Vegas in her shiny new VW Beetle, but a hit-man accompanies her much to her chagrin. “Mouse Hunt” director Gore Verbinski struggles futilely to blend farcical comedy with grim tragedy.
